Apparently while we were away the owls called in another bird of prey to live in the trees at the back of our yard. We now have a hawk that has made its home in our backyard. So not only do we have to fear for our dogs' lives during the night when they go out but now also during the day. Since owls and unfortunately hawks also are federally protected birds, Animal Control could not relocate them, shoot them, or basically do anything to help. They have given us some suggestions as to how to make the birds so uncomfortable that they might leave though which included shining light at them, stringing the trees with fishing wire, and shooting fireworks at them. Luckily on our way home, Nervous Charlies fireworks was open and we were able to purchase some bottle rockets. Bryan with the permission of the BGPD has shot a few at the hawk and the owls so far tonight and they have immediately flown out of sight. I don't know how far they have gone or how long it will take for them to return but hopefully the fireworks will work. I mean what are the odds of either two, possibly three owls on some nights, and a hawk living in your backyard in the middle of town? It's pretty crazy for sure.
Here is a better picture of two of the owls. It was taken from pretty far away. The one on the right was in a tree right above me and then flew to this spot which is actually in our neighbor's yard. It is about a foot and a half tall.
