Around mid day on Saturday, I noticed Sophie started having some strong contractions and I knew that the time was nearing for her to have her puppies. Around two, Sophie started pushing.
By 2:28 the first healthy girl was born.
She will be known as Eleanor during her 8 week stay with us.
Then we waited and waited and waited. It shouldn't take a dog more than an hour to have each puppy but obviously that was not the case for Sophie because of the time lapse in between her first and second. So we waited and she kept contracting and pushing off and on. At about 8:30 p.m. we called the vet to seek some advice. The vet did not seem worried as long as Sophie was not in distress and she was still contracting and pushing. She said that Sophie was in control and we should just wait it out. She said Sophie might have just been resting. We were exhausted from just waiting so I completely understood.
I stayed awake until close to 3 a.m. and then I finally decided that if Sophie had the puppy and I didn't hear her, she could surely take care of it by herself. So Bryan and I slept lightly until about 7:30. Still no sign that the third puppy was coming. We could feel two more so we knew she wasn't done, so we called the vet again. This time they said we should bring her in. Bryan took Sophie while I stayed home with the puppies. We felt sure that at least one of the puppies was probably dead since they figured out in the pre-surgery exam that a puppy's leg was stuck in the birth canal and that was the reason Sophie couldn't push it out. An hour and half after Sophie had arrived at the vet, Bryan got the call that we could pick her up along with two healthy male puppies. We were overjoyed that they were all fine!
Puppy 3, very whiney, and he doesn't have a name quite yet.
Once Sophie arrived home we spent about an hour trying to get the two males to nurse. Apparently they were healthy but appeared a little dehydrated to the vet so we really needed to get them nursing. That is not the easiest thing to do when they are groggy from the c-section medications. Within a couple of hours of Sophie returning home, all four puppies were thriving.
Sophie is going to have some recovering to do, but she should be back to her old self in about a week and a half.
The next 8 weeks should be interesting and an adventure for sure with a house full of adorable puppies!
